Wedding Insurance in India: What It Costs and What It Actually Covers

Wedding and event insurance in India explained: what cancellation, liability and equipment cover actually pay for, what they exclude, when to buy relative to your bookings, and the specific risks of a winter destination wedding in Rajasthan.

Indian wedding season runs from November to March, and Jaipur sits near the centre of it. A destination wedding here can involve four events across three days, several hundred guests, a heritage venue booked a year ahead, and vendor advances that are gone the moment they are paid. Almost none of those families buy insurance for any of it. Some of them should.

What wedding insurance actually covers

There is no separate product called wedding insurance in most Indian insurers’ catalogues. What you are buying is event insurance, written for a wedding, and assembled from a handful of covers you choose between. The useful ones are these.

  • Cancellation and postponement: the non refundable money you lose if the event cannot go ahead for a covered reason, such as serious illness, an accident, or a venue becoming unusable.
  • Public liability: injury to a guest or damage to someone else’s property during your event, which is the cover most people have never thought about and the one with the largest tail.
  • Damage to the venue itself, which heritage and hotel venues increasingly require you to carry before they will confirm a booking.
  • Loss or damage to hired equipment: sound, lighting, staging, generators, decor. You signed for it, so you are liable for it.
  • Jewellery and gifts, on some policies, usually with tight conditions about custody and documentation.

What it does not cover

This is where expectations and policy wording part company, so read these before you decide the product is worthless or indispensable.

  • Cold feet. A called off wedding because someone changed their mind is excluded everywhere. Cancellation cover is for circumstances outside your control, not a change of heart.
  • A vendor simply failing to deliver or disappearing with an advance, unless you have bought specific vendor default cover and the insurer accepts the documentation.
  • Ordinary bad weather at an outdoor venue, unless weather is specifically written into the policy. Being cold and wet is not usually an insured event.
  • Items left unattended, which is how most jewellery and gift claims die.
  • Anything you cannot evidence. No police complaint, no venue incident report, no invoices, no claim.

When to buy it

Buy it when the money starts becoming non refundable, not the week before the event. The point of cancellation cover is to protect deposits and advances, so a policy bought after everything is already paid and committed is protecting far less than it could have. For a wedding booked a year out, that usually means buying once the venue and the main vendors are confirmed. Insurers also price and underwrite more comfortably with distance from the date, and some will not write cover at all inside a short window.

What drives the premium

  • The total value you want insured, which for cancellation means the sum of everything you cannot get back.
  • Guest count, which drives liability exposure more than anything else on the list.
  • The number of separate events. A sangeet, a haldi, the wedding and a reception is four exposures, not one.
  • The venue type. A heritage property, a palace lawn or a tented site underwrites differently from a hotel ballroom.
  • The liability limit you choose, which is the single lever most people set too low.
  • Whether it is a destination wedding, with guests and vendors travelling in.

The specific risks of a winter wedding in Rajasthan

The season exists because the weather is good, but the same months carry their own pattern of problems. North Indian winter fog disrupts flights and trains through December and January, which is a travel risk for a guest list flying in rather than a weather risk at the venue. Outdoor and tented setups concentrate value in hired equipment that is exposed overnight. Large heritage venues bring venue damage liability that a family has no appetite to self insure. And peak season means your vendors are running several events at once, which is exactly when delivery failures cluster.

Should you actually buy it?

Most Indian families do not, and for a small function at a local banquet hall with modest advances, that is a defensible call. The premium is real money and the probability is low. The honest answer is that this product earns its place in specific situations rather than universally.

  • The non refundable committed spend is large enough that losing it would genuinely hurt the family’s finances.
  • It is a destination wedding, where guests and vendors are travelling and a disruption cascades.
  • The venue contractually requires liability or venue damage cover before confirming.
  • Several hundred guests are attending, which makes a liability claim a question of odds rather than imagination.
  • A key person in the wedding has a health condition that makes postponement a live possibility.

If none of those apply, you are probably fine without it, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling. If two or more apply, price it properly and read the exclusions before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

How much does wedding insurance cost in India?

There is no single rate. The premium is driven by the total value insured, the guest count, the number of separate events, the venue type, the liability limit you select and whether it is a destination wedding. A small local function and a multi day destination wedding for several hundred guests are different risks and price very differently, so the only meaningful number is a quote against your actual event details.

Does wedding insurance cover a cancelled engagement?

No. Calling off the wedding because someone changed their mind is excluded under every policy. Cancellation cover responds to circumstances outside your control, such as serious illness, an accident, or the venue becoming unusable.

When should I buy wedding insurance?

Once the venue and main vendors are confirmed and your money starts becoming non refundable. Cancellation cover protects deposits and advances, so buying after everything is already committed protects much less. Some insurers also decline to write cover close to the event date.

Do I need public liability cover for a wedding?

It is the cover most families overlook and the one with the largest potential cost. It responds to injury to a guest or damage to third party property during your event. Many heritage and hotel venues now require it contractually before confirming a booking.
